Consolidated Review of Subsidised Rental Housing Projects Including Policy Lessons Learned
This report consolidates the findings of the policy lessons learned from the Project Review Series (PRS) and from other key research resources developed by the SHF. A representative sample of 12 projects illustrating a diversity of practices was extracted from 25 project reviews.
Project Review Series
The Project Review Series (PRS) which was instigated to document good practice case studies of social housing projects around South Africa. In this anthology twelve of the most recent Project Review Series issues are presented.
New Europa House
The New Europa House is a conversion project in which the dilapidated inner city Europa Hotel was refurbished and converted into housing units.
The Europa Hotel was built in 1940 but suffered the same fate as many buildings in Hillbrow, becoming a slum and a haven for strippers, drug lords, murderers, pimps, prostitutes and even street children. A popular nightclub (Razmatazz) was operated from the premises. Due to its drastic decline, the hotel was famously referred to as "the queen of sleaze".
Moshoeshoe Eco Village
The Moshoeshoe Eco Village was built as a pilot project to the larger low- and middle-income Hull Street housing project. The Hull Street Integration Project was initiated by the Swedish International Development Co-operation Agency (Sida) and launched in co-operation with the Swedish and South African governments.
N2 Gateway - Joe Slovo
The Joe Slovo project is part of the bigger National N2 Gateway project involving the development of 25 750 affordable housing units. The project was established to rapidly address the housing and development needs of households in informal settlements adjacent to the N2 highway in Cape Town.
Sakhasonke is innovative for several reasons. It presents ways in which higher density housing can reduce land and service costs in order to provide bigger houses; it helps to reduce urban sprawl; and it also integrates lower-income urban residents with the existing environment.
Walter Sisulu Square Precinct -Kliptown
The Kliptown development is situated with the K43 Klipspruit Valley Road to the east, Pimville Dlamini Link Road to the north, and the railway to the west. The Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication borders the development on the south..
The Amalinda Project is a large social housing project based in East London. The first phase of the project has been completed with the second phase now under construction.
Brickfields and Legae
The Brickfields concept is one of the latest new build projects developed by Johannesburg Housing Company (JHC) in the inner city of Johannesburg as part of the Newtown redevelopment.

The Living Stones Transitional Housing Project forms part of the bigger Burgers Park Village concept of urban renewal, which includes the provision of different housing options for people in need of shelter, economic development and spiritual guidance.
Royal Maitland is a sectional title project developed by the Cape Town Community Housing Company in an area that had seen very little urban investment over the last few years.
This project has been considered a success by housing professionals, the management agent and the residents. It has won the "Best Social Housing Project" award from the South African Institute of Housing in 2002.
